D-TECH-BASE

Development of a digital test field RoRo port Kiel with two thematic test fields: 5G terminal communication and 5G traffic control

Initial situation / motivation

Ensuring fast and secure data transmission, guaranteed network availability with high bandwidths, predefined data throughput and constant availability cannot be guaranteed in the long term with the existing LTE networks and outdated one-dimensional systems in the RoRo seaport of Kiel. Accordingly, a modern digital information and communication infrastructure (ICT) with specific, innovative, state-of-the-art systems must be implemented in order to ensure the efficient, sustainable, smooth, flexible and transparent handling and functioning of logistics chains on the international market in the long term.

Project objective

The ‘D-TECH-BASE’ project in the RoRo port of Kiel aims to implement a digital test field in two trial areas (5G terminal communication and 5G traffic control). The key objective is to use digital transformation to ensure the smooth transport and mobility of goods.
The overall concept of the project focuses on efficient working, linking modes of transport and automated and continuously monitored movement, storage and handling processes using the ICT infrastructure, which is based on human-machine interaction.

Realisation

The individual measures of the project each go through the following three phases: Planning, procurement and construction. Individual phases run in parallel or are interdependent.

Measures 1-6:

  1. Construction of the 5G campus network as the basis for the entire test field
  2. Installation of Fleet Management Smart Connect Systems,
e.g. for usage and damage analyses and vehicle deployment planning/networking
  3. Introduction of intelligent traffic control (large screens for dynamic content,
    i.e. traffic guidance information)
  4. Modernised seaward and landside access and flow control (information acquisition through scanning gates and real-time processing)
  5. Implementation of OCR camera system and tagless optical unit tracking to capture large amounts of data as part of digital tracking
  6. Optimisation of IT security as the basis for the entire project
