Sustainable energy utilisation: a path to the future

Ports play a central role in the global economy and international trade. In view of increasing environmental pollution and climate change, the sustainable use of energy is becoming increasingly important. Through innovative technologies and environmentally friendly measures, we can further reduce our ecological footprint and make a significant contribution to climate protection.

At the PORT OF KIEL, we are focussing on sustainable energy use by integrating renewable energies in order to reduce CO2 emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels. We are also increasingly focussing on energy-efficient technologies. The use of LED lighting and energy-optimised building technology helps to reduce energy consumption. The electrification of the port infrastructure, such as the switch from diesel-powered vehicles to electric drives, also plays an important role. This applies both to cargo handling vehicles and to the vehicle fleets of port employees. The sustainable use of energy is a complex but necessary endeavour. By using renewable energies, energy-efficient technologies, intermodal transport systems and shore power systems, we can improve our environmental footprint and make an important contribution to global climate protection.

Green electricity

The basis must be right: Whether for shore power, real estate or charging the fleet of electric vehicles: since 2014, we at the PORT OF KIEL have covered our electricity requirements entirely from renewable energy sources. In 2023, 100 per cent of this came from German wind power and solar energy generated on our port areas.

Photovoltaic systems

Areas where it is possible and sensible have been and are being fitted with solar panels. We can operate on a large scale at the airport. In the future, we hope to be able to use certified regional green electricity from Schleswig-Holstein to supply our facilities and means of transport travelling via Kiel by sea, land and air. The implementation of a consistent internal energy-saving strategy and the use of self-generated energy from photovoltaic systems has halved CO₂ emissions in the  property sector compared to 2023 and 2019.

LED technology

We consistently focus on innovative and sustainable technologies. As part of this, we utilise port-wide energy-efficient LED lighting technology and thus achieve considerable energy savings. The longer service life leads to a reduction in operating costs and maintenance expenses.

Taskforce 'Energy'

Overall, our own electricity requirements are to be reduced and supplemented by self-generated green electricity. Among other things, the ‘Energy’ task force was set up for this purpose, which is making a number of adjustments and developing specific measures to reduce electricity consumption throughout the company. With success: last year's energy consumption was jointly reduced by more than 20 per cent.

BLU.E-Mobility

The switch from diesel-powered vehicles to electric drives plays an important role. This applies both to handling vehicles and to the vehicle fleets of port employees. We are gradually converting all ground vehicles to electric or hydrogen drives and are promoting the development of alternative drives for tractor units and forklift trucks through test operations.
